Hard Work Continues as United Way Surpasses 60% Mark in Annual Campaign

The community gave Greater Ottawa County United Way--and the 63 nonprofit health and human services programs it supports--a great Christmas present. Under United Way’s Christmas tree this year was a tidily wrapped 60% sticker to go up on the thermometer signs that keep Ottawa County updated on the 2008-09 community campaign.

In fact, a total of $1,353,943 in pledges and donations had been tallied as of December 22, which put the campaign at 64% of its $2.11 million goal.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to our community for their continued support during this year’s campaign,” said Jeff Beswick, Campaign Chair. “In this uncertain economy our partners face tough challenges in providing for the needs of their clients. It is heartwarming to see that those who are able to give are still supporting the campaign.”

While many United Way chapters in Michigan have fallen short of their goals, Ottawa County residents remain stalwart in their generosity, and campaign officials remain hopeful.  “This community has always stepped up to the plate to take care of those in need, and this year has been no different” said Patrick Moran, President of Greater Ottawa County United Way. “But we are finding it harder and harder to keep up with the enormous increases in need that our partners are facing.”

Angie Barksdale, Greater Ottawa County’s Director of Development, predicts that the “home stretch” of the campaign will be a challenge as layoffs continue and more people turn to partner agencies for help. “We continue to work hard on completing the campaign, to assure that as many people as possible are given the opportunity to invest in the building blocks of a better life.”  She explained that residents who are not able to give through their employment can give online at www.ottawaunitedway.org

“At times like these, with so much need in the community, every gift of any amount makes a difference,” she said.

United Way staff and campaign volunteers will continue their diligent work until March when the campaign and past year of events will be celebrated at their annual Celebration Dinner, scheduled for Thursday, March 26 at Doubletree Hotel, Holland.  For more information on how to Live United through the work of the Greater Ottawa County United Way go to www.ottawaunitedway.org.
